Eagles player reveals he advised his family to avoid Brazil due to high crime rate: "It's insane"
In Week 1 on Friday, the Packers and Eagles will square off in Brazil.
Darius Slay of the Philadelphia Eagles is excited about their Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers on Friday, but he is not thrilled about the team's journey to Brazil.
In a recent episode of his podcast "Big Play Slay," the six-time Pro Bowler voiced safety concerns for the teams participating in games in South America, stating that he advised his family not to travel to Brazil to watch him play.
""I've been eagerly anticipating Week 1, but I must admit, I don't want to go to Brazil. The reason being, the crime rate is insane and they've warned us not to venture too far from the hotel," he said."
Slay advised his family to stay home because he would not be able to see them much while on the trip.
"Why would you want to send us to a place with such a high crime rate when we're already out of the country? People are bound to think about the possibility of a terrorist attack. I told my family not to come down because I won't be anywhere to be found. I'll be staying in the hotel, relaxing, and playing my game after a long 9.5-hour flight."
Slay hopes the Eagles can win in Brazil and return home safely.
The NFL's first-ever game in Brazil will take place on Friday at the Corinthians Arena in São Paulo. This stadium, which has hosted the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, is the home of the Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians.
The NFL will host five international games during the regular season, including the New York Jets vs. Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Chicago Bears, and New England Patriots vs. Jaguars, all in London.
In November, the Carolina Panthers will face off against the New York Giants in Germany.
