What does bodycam video reveal about Tyreek Hill's fight against speeding and seat belt tickets?
Hill's lawyer hints at the possibility of altering the plea in the future.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and his lawyer, Julius B. Collins, will enter a not guilty plea to Hill's two traffic citations that resulted after a confrontation with police Sunday, Collins confirmed in an exclusive interview with Planet Chronicle Digital on Friday.
On Sunday, Hill was given a ticket for careless driving and not wearing a seatbelt during a traffic stop. In widely-disseminated videos, Hill confronted the police, leading to his removal from the vehicle, handcuffing, and being pushed to the ground.
A Miami-Dade Police officer was caught on camera driving at a high speed on a highway.
The footage showed Hill driving past several other cars after merging into the left lane, and then being pursued by officers.
One of the officers informed Hill he was speeding when his car was seen next time.
Due to the absence of evidence, such as a radar gun, in the video, Collins believes he has a case against Hill.
Collins stated that he had never heard of estimating someone's speed by physically looking at them.
"We lack any details about whether laser radar or anything else was employed, or if he was pacing him. As a result, we will plead not guilty."
Collins said that they may later change the plea depending on the evidence.
Collins stated that the situation could change in the future depending on the official account of a police report, which could potentially alter the outcome.
The officer asked Hill to put on his seat belt when he approached his car in the body cam footage.
The footage did not show whether Hill had his seat belt on at the exact moment the officer said it. However, later shots revealed Hill without a seat belt on and pulling his tinted windows back. Beneath the obstructed view of the windows, Hill was seen putting his seat belt back on after the officer instructed him to "keep your window down!".
Collins stated that they lacked any official police reports to explain why Hill pleaded guilty, including whether he had his seat belt on. At one point, they observed that Hill was not wearing his seat belt.
"At the time of the traffic stop, you can remove it before the officer arrived at the vehicle. We lack any information, so he will likely plead not guilty until we receive the police report."
Collins refused to respond when asked if Hill had informed him he was wearing a seat belt while driving, invoking attorney-client privilege.
The video eventually revealed the instant when Hill was restrained and pushed to the ground.
As the officer asked Hill to exit his vehicle, the wide receiver said, "I'm gonna get out, I'm gonna get out." When the officer opened the door and removed Hill, the receiver said, "I'm getting out."
Another officer grabbed Hill by the back of the head and neck area and forced him to the ground to put him in handcuffs.
After about 25 minutes, Hill was released and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, arrived. Hill then told officers he would "see y'all in court" before getting back into his vehicle.
Danny Torres, the 27-year police veteran who put Hill in handcuffs, should be fired, according to Hill's call.
After being placed on paid administrative duty by the Miami-Dade Police director, Torres' lawyers are demanding that the officer be reinstated immediately.
The lawyers called for an immediate reinstatement of their client and a comprehensive investigation, as Director Daniels had also recommended. They stated that their client would not make any comments until the investigation was completed and all facts were made public.
