Texas starter injured, Arch Manning scores 2 touchdowns in 3 plays after coming off the bench.
Over the past year, Manning has gradually climbed the depth chart.
Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning ran away from a family stigma Saturday.
UTSA's lead over Texas was extended by 67 yards when Manning scored a touchdown on the longest play of his college career.
In three snaps on offense, Manning scored his second touchdown. He replaced Texas starter Quinn Ewers, who was injured and his status is uncertain.
In his first play, Manning linked up with DeAndre Moore for a touchdown, giving Texas a commanding 21-0 lead.
Just two plays into its next possession, UTSA scored a 53-yard touchdown run by Robert Henry, reducing the lead to 21-7. In response, Manning quickly answered.
The Longhorns' next drive began with an eight-yard run by running back Quintrevion Wisner. On the following play, Manning scored a 67-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 28-7, leading into halftime.
Fans were accustomed to watching Peyton and Eli Manning play in the NFL, but were taken aback by Manning's extended run.
Peyton and Eli were frequently mocked for their slow running style and lack of speed as pocket passers.
But Arch has shown he brings a different element to the table.
Manning had a successful game for Ewers against Colorado State on Aug. 31, going 5-for-6 for 95 yards and scoring his first touchdown pass and rushing score on the next drive. Texas won 52-0.
Last season, the five-star recruit from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans played in only two Longhorns games, with Ewers as the team's starting quarterback.
This year, Ewers was named the team's starter by head coach Steve Sarkisian after the team lost in the College Football Playoff to Washington last season. On Saturday, he was productive, going 20-for-27 for 260 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
Last season, Manning was the third-string quarterback for the Longhorns. However, with Maalik Murphy transferring to Duke, Manning has moved up to the second-string position behind Ewers.
If Ewers' injury prevents him from playing for a considerable period, Manning may have the chance to make his first college start.
