Steve Gleason, a former Saints player, is currently stable after being transferred to a hospital as Hurricane Francine hits the region.
In 2011, Gleason disclosed his ALS diagnosis.
Despite being hospitalized due to Hurricane Francine, former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason, who is fighting ALS, remained stable.
On Thursday, Gleason's family posted on his X account that he had been transferred to Ochsner Medical Center with the assistance of the New Orleans Fire Department.
"Steve was taken to Ochsner last night during the storm and is now stable. We want to thank the NOLA Fire Department and New Orleans EMS first responders for getting to us during unsafe circumstances and the Ochsner Health staff for their immediate care. We will update everyone as soon as we know more. Thanks, the Gleason Crew."
ESPN reported that Gleason's publicist Clare Durrett stated that the player was experiencing a fever and had extremely low blood pressure, and his doctor recommended hospitalization. Meanwhile, Francine was a Category 2 hurricane heading towards the state.
"Durrett informed the outlet that they promptly stabilized him and transported him to Ochsner. He is currently stable and receiving treatment. They are optimistic that Steve, being the fighter he is, will recover quickly and return home as soon as possible."
On Friday, Gleason's family shared an update from the ex-player.
On 9/11, during Hurricane Francine, ALS struck with power outages and poor phone service, making it a formidable force.
"Thank you for the powerful love and support from all of you.
"Celebrate this change to be alive and breathing."
From 2000 to 2006, Gleason spent seven seasons with the Saints and accumulated 71 tackles in 83 games.
In 2011, he disclosed that he was struggling with ALS. He received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2019 and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award this year.
