An autopsy has revealed that an Alabama high school football player, 14, died from a heart condition.
On Aug. 13, football practice saw Semaj Wilkins collapse.
According to the Coffee County Coroner's Office, the cause of death of an Alabama high school football player who collapsed during a practice in August has been determined.
On Aug. 13, during football practice at New Brockton High School, 14-year-old freshman Semaj Wilkins collapsed and was unresponsive before being transported to an area hospital. The coroner's report confirmed this information.
On Thursday, an autopsy conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences revealed that Semaj tragically died due to congestive heart failure resulting from cardiomegaly with biventricular hypertrophy, caused by a coronary anomaly.
The death was classified as natural.
An enlarged heart and thickened heart walls are the definitions of cardiomegaly and ventricular hypertrophy, respectively, on the Mayo Clinic's website. This condition can lead to inefficient blood pumping by the heart.
At the time of his passing, Coffee County Schools Superintendent Kelly Cobb wrote on Facebook that Semaj was a young man who brought joy and inspiration to his peers, teammates, coaches, and faculty members. His loss will be deeply felt by everyone who knew him.
In August, seven football-related deaths occurred, including Semaj, prompting warnings from parents and others to prioritize sports safety measures.
The causes of their deaths varied, including heatstroke, chest pains, and head injuries.
