Wayne Gretzky was asked by President-elect Trump to become the 'governor of Canada'.
Trump has requested for Canada to be considered as the '51st state'.
Following Justin Trudeau's announcement of his intention to resign as Canada's prime minister, president-elect Trump had a plan for his successor.
Since Trudeau's decision, Trump has persisted in his efforts to annex Canada as the 51st state of the United States.
If it happens, Trump claims he enlisted Wayne Gretzky to serve as its "governor," despite Trudeau's earlier assertion that there was no chance of it occurring.
At Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, Trump stated, "I was with Wayne Gretzky. I asked him, 'Wayne, would you like to be the governor of Canada?' I can't imagine anyone doing better than Wayne."
"Wayne was not too interested in statehood, but he probably would have liked it," Trump said. "He's a friend of mine and a great guy. We call him the great one because he's a great hockey player."
Trump's 2024 election victory was celebrated at a party attended by Gretzky, who defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the election.
Dustin Johnson, Gretzky's son-in-law, is a player on the LIV Golf tour, which has hosted events at Trump's golf courses.
During a news conference on Tuesday in Palm Beach, Trump stated that Canada should be a state. In a social media post on Monday, the president-elect expressed that many people in Canada love being the 51st state.
"If we were united, we could make our country even greater!" Trump exclaimed in his social media post.
After facing criticism over his handling of the economy and pressure from within his own Liberal Party, Trudeau announced he will resign as party leader and prime minister once a new leader is chosen.
