Ben Shelton criticizes Australian Open interviewers for their treatment of players.
Novak Djokovic turned down an on-court interview after being mocked by his fans and labeled a "has-been."
On Tuesday, after winning his quarterfinal match at the Australian Open, American tennis player Ben Shelton criticized the TV interviewers, stating that he believes several of the post-match interviews during the tournament have gone too far.
In his press conference after defeating Lorenzo Sonego, Shelton made an unexpected comment about player interviews, which have been scrutinized this week after Novak Djokovic declined to do an interview following criticism about his fans.
""I've been shocked this week by how players have been treated by broadcasters, as I've noticed it with different people, not just myself," said Shelton, 22."
In his fourth round victory over 38-year-old French veteran Gael Monfils, Shelton mentioned several incidents, including his on-court interview with Roger Rasheed, who remarked that Monfils is "almost like your dad."
Both players are Black, and Shelton asked, "Was that a Black joke?"
Rasheed replied, "I'm not sure."
In his interview following the quarterfinal match, Shelton discussed his upcoming semifinal contest against reigning champion Jannik Sinner, with the interviewer expressing doubt about his fan base in that match.
Shelton stated that the comment made by a man he had never met before was not respectful.
"Broadcasters should be aiding in the growth of our sport and allowing athletes who have recently won matches on a grand stage to relish in one of their greatest achievements. I believe that the excessive negativity needs to cease."
Australian Channel 9 journalist Tony Jones faced criticism from broadcasters at this year's Grand Slam after he called Djokovic "overrated" and "a has-been" while mocking Serbian fans. Djokovic refused an on-court interview until he received an apology.
On Monday, the network issued a statement apologizing for any offense caused by comments made during a live broadcast.
"We intend no harm towards Novak or his fans and are excited to showcase his Australian Open campaign at Melbourne Park."
