Mahomes discusses Kelce's retirement possibility: "If it's his final game, let's give him a victory."
Kelce has expressed uncertainty about returning next year.
During an interview on 96.5 The Fan on Tuesday, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs addressed questions about Travis Kelce's potential retirement after this season.
Mahomes stated that he hasn't discussed the tight end's retirement plans, but if he decides to retire, Mahomes wants the team to give him a fitting send-off.
"Mahomes stated that he has no idea if his teammate is thinking that it's his last game, and added, "If it is his last game, let's go out there and get him a win. If it's not his last game, let's go out and get him a win anyway.""
Kelce, who is under contract until the end of the next season, may choose to retire and enjoy his lifestyle.
Mahomes stated that he knows the player signed a two-year extension before the season, and it appears he still loves football. However, he also has a fulfilling life outside of football.
In April, Kelce signed a $34.25 million contract, despite some speculation that he might retire after the 2023 season.
Since 2018, Mahomes has favored Kelce as his primary target, and the two have won three Super Bowls together. Currently, they are striving to win a fourth and become the first team in NFL history to achieve three consecutive victories.
The Chiefs' popularity in sports has been boosted by Mahomes and Kelce, with Kelce's connection to Taylor Swift attracting a significant number of female fans.
Mahomes appreciates every time he steps onto the field with the guy he knows is a true legend of not only the Chiefs but also the NFL.
During an interview on "The Stephen A. Smith Show" on Jan. 15, Kelce revealed the possibility of retiring after this season.
Kelce stated that he enjoys all of his activities in the building, but despite his individual success, he is not achieving the same level of success on the field as he had hoped.
"I'll reevaluate it like I always do, and I'll probably tell myself how much I love this thing, and I'll come back next year. I still love coming into the building every day. Does it get hard? Yeah, but I'm not doing it for the stats. I'm doing it for the greatness, the legacy that we've created here in Kansas City," he added. "I can't fathom what it would feel like just being able to say I'm satisfied because I'm still hungry to go and get something right now."
Following the Chiefs' recent playoff win over the Houston Texans, Kelce posted a mysterious message on social media, adding to the rumors that he may be retiring soon.
The most significant football experience of your life is playing in the playoffs," he stated in a video shared on the Chiefs' Instagram account. "Each play is highly valued, and I always aim for excellence while playing.
"Exceeding your current abilities. Clearly, there's a significant accomplishment within our reach that no other team has ever achieved. This motivates us."
In the 2024 regular season, Kelce had 97 catches for 823 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games without missing a single game due to injury.
Swift has expressed support for Kelce to continue playing if he chooses to do so.
On Sunday, the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs will clash in the AFC Championship game to determine who will advance to the Super Bowl.
