Reports indicate that the Jets have appointed Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, who previously served as the Lions' defensive coordinator.
In the 1994 NFL Draft, the Jets selected Glenn in the first round.
Aaron Glenn, the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator, is taking on his first NFL head coaching job.
On Wednesday, Glenn, a top coaching candidate this offseason, was appointed as the New York Jets head coach, marking the first time a former player has returned as head coach in nearly 50 years, according to ESPN.
On Wednesday, multiple outlets reported the news that Glenn met with Jets brass on Tuesday.
The Saints were reportedly competing with other teams to sign Glenn after parting ways with Dennis Allen in November.
Glenn, a three-time Pro Bowler, began his NFL career as a cornerback when the Jets picked him 12th overall in the 1994 Draft. He played eight seasons in New York before being traded to the Houston Texans in the 2002 NFL expansion draft.
After his retirement from playing in 2008, Glenn shifted to coaching and spent the last four seasons managing the Lions' defense. He then interviewed with multiple teams before eventually accepting the job in New York.
In addition to Glenn, over a dozen other coaches were considered for the Jets position, including Brian Flores, Jeff Hafley, Ron Rivera, and Rex Ryan, among others.
The Associated Press reported that Glenn was the sole candidate to receive a follow-up interview.
Robert Saleh was fired after five games, and Glenn takes over as the new coach, with fans eager for a change.
In 2023, the Jets' struggles seemed to be ending when they acquired four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers. However, a season-ending injury in his debut in New York halted those plans.
Despite the addition of Rodgers' favorite target, the 2024 season didn't improve much for the Jets, who continued their historic playoff drought.
