Josh McDaniels is reportedly reuniting with the Patriots as Mike Vrabel's offensive coordinator.
McDaniels will make his third return to the Patriots during his coaching career.
In the 2025 season, Mike Vrabel continued the trend of choosing a familiar face as the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator.
According to multiple reports, Josh McDaniels is expected to reunite with the Patriots as their offensive coordinator, a position he previously held with the team. Barstool Sports first reported the imminent return of McDaniels to the Patriots.
For the third time, McDaniels will return to the Patriots, with Vrabel as head coach and Maye as the quarterback to be mentored after his rookie season in 2024.
ESPN reports that McDaniels was one of the offensive coordinator candidates the Patriots had been interviewing, along with Thomas Brown, the passing game coordinator for the Chicago Bears, and Marcus Brady, the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.
In 2024, McDaniels was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders mid-season, ending his tenure as head coach after one season. Despite being head coach in 2022, things did not go as planned, and owner Mark Davis made the decision to part ways.
After Antonio Pierce's departure as interim head coach, the Raiders are still searching for their own head coach. Meanwhile, the Patriots have found their guy in Vrabel, who replaced Jerod Mayo after his first season.
Despite never coaching together, Vrabel and McDaniels share a bond from their time together as player and coach respectively, where they won three Super Bowls under Belichick and Brady.
McDaniels got his first big chance in the NFL with the Patriots in 2001 as an assistant under Belichick. He later rose through the ranks and was hired by the Denver Broncos in 2009 to become their new head coach.
McDaniels' tenure as the Rams' offensive coordinator was brief, as he was fired in December 2010 and later returned to the Patriots.
McDaniels, who was New England's coordinator from 2018 to 2020, would relish his time in the role before moving to the Raiders for his second attempt at head coaching. During the 2021 season, he was also responsible for mentoring Mac Jones, the team's first-round quarterback pick in the NFL Draft, and helped them make the playoffs.
Maye, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, showed spurts of greatness in his first NFL season despite the team's overall struggles. He threw for 2,276 yards with 15 touchdowns to 10 interceptions with two rushing touchdowns on 421 yards over 12 games.
Bringing in a familiar face with an extensive track record could help the Patriots find their next dynasty as Vrabel builds out his coaching staff this offseason.
