Igor Shesterkin and Senators' star engage in fisticuffs, causing game to become chaotic.
On Tuesday, the Senators were defeated 5-0 by the Rangers.
After the whistle, it's common to see scrums in the NHL. However, it's not typical to see a renowned goaltender participate in the brawl following the whistle.
Igor Shesterkin, the star goalie of the New York Rangers, was prepared to fight during their 5-0 win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday in New York.
With 12:51 remaining in the third period, the Senators scored three goals to tie the Rangers 3-3 in Madison Square Garden.
Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers' star goalie, was sent back into his own net by Senators captain Brady Tkachuk while chasing a loose puck around his neck.
The goalie was quickly defended by the five Rangers players as they surrounded Tkachuk.
The Senators’ players on the ice defended their captain, and eventually each player from both teams engaged in a shoving match.
Gathering himself, Shesterkin hunched over in the crease amidst the chaos.
As the chaos subsided, Shesterkin charged into the fray and pursued Tkachuk.
Tkachuk, seeing Shesterkin approaching, swung at the goalie's helmet, causing Shesterkin to fall, and Shesterkin retaliated by throwing a blocker at Tkachuk.
Shesterkin was jostled by Tkachuk, who was holding his right arm, before the referees intervened and removed him from the scrum.
Tkachuk was being pulled away when Rempe, known for his fighting skills in his brief NHL career, chased after him.
Despite Rempe and Tkachuk throwing punches at each other around the referee, a referee got between them and prevented them from fighting.
After order was restored on the ice, the referees handed out numerous penalties.
Shesterkin received a two-minute penalty for leaving the goalie's crease, while Rempe was given a double-minor penalty for roughing.
Tkachuk received a double-minor penalty for roughing and was also penalized for goalie interference.
Ryan Lindgren of the Rangers was also given a minor penalty for roughing Shane Pinto, the Senators' center.
After all the penalties, the Rangers were on the power play, and Artemi Panarin scored to lead 4-0.
The Rangers won with goals from Alexis Lafrenière, Arthur Kaliyev, Rempe, Panarin, and Will Cuylle.
Despite losing four out of 19 games in December, the Rangers have recovered and are now 7-1-3 in their last 11 games, putting them back in the wild-card race.
In the second consecutive game, Shesterkin kept the Senators from scoring by stopping all 20 of their shots on target.
The Flyers face the Rangers on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET, as the Rangers aim to maintain their winning streak.
