Oilers goal was not caused by netminder Logan Thompson, but rather by a rouge nacho platter.
The Capitals have won five consecutive games.
During the third period of Tuesday night's game against the league-leading Washington Capitals, Corey Perry of the Edmonton Oilers likely had one of the most unusual assists of his career.
In the third period, with the Oilers trailing 3-1, center Leon Draisaitl made a quick pass to Perry, who beat Capitals netminder Logan Thompson to reduce the lead to one goal.
Officials were pleaded to by Thompson, who appeared to have an issue with the sequence of events on the ice, claiming that something had been thrown before the pass was made.
One of the NHL's top goalies was distracted by a platter of nachos.
After the game, ESPN reported that Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said, "That's a first."
"In the coaches' office, we discussed the topic of nachos on ice in National Hockey League games. I've never seen such a game before. Did they save them? Perhaps we can bring them into the locker room."
Perry skated around the concession stand to score the back of the net, while Thompson admitted after the game that he should have played until the whistle.
"I've never seen that before. I've got to play to the whistle. That one's on me," Thompson said, adding that he saw the fan who threw the nachos.
"Although I wasn't thrilled, I must admit he did score a goal," he said, implying he was an Oilers fan.
For his part, Perry admitted to not even noticing the platter.
The Capitals maintained a 3-2 lead and won the game, extending their win streak to five straight, despite the setback. The Oilers have lost two games in a row, their first since star forward Connor McDavid was suspended for three games for cross-checking.
