Victor Robles of the Mariners was criticized for his baserunning errors in their loss to the Yankees, with some calling his mistakes "absolutely ridiculous."
With bases loaded and a 3-0 count, Justin Turner managed to prevent Robles from stealing home with only two outs.
On Tuesday night, the Seattle Mariners were defeated by the New York Yankees, with one of the reasons being an "absolutely ridiculous" call by Victor Robles in the bottom of the first inning, which resulted in the Mariners scoring only one run.
With Turner at the plate, who has a career batting average of over .320 in similar situations, the Yankees starter Luis Gil was struggling to find the strike zone and threw three straight balls for a 3-0 count, leaving nowhere to put Turner.
In the top of the inning, New York had scored two runs due to Aaron Judge's RBI double. As a result, the Mariners found themselves in a favorable position to potentially tie or surpass the lead.
As Gil picked up the rosin bag behind the mound, Robles became too aggressive at third base.
Gil quickly snapped a throw to his catcher, Austin Wells, who applied the tag for the out as Robles booked it to home plate.
The inning ended, and nobody could comprehend why Robles thought it was acceptable to leave.
After the play happened, Michael Kay and Jeff Nelson were in disbelief during the YES Network broadcast for the Yankees.
"Kay exclaimed, 'Absolutely ridiculous, 3-0, and Justin Turner is staring into the dugout as if to say, "Really?"'
Robles made a "bonehead" mistake, resulting in his replacement as designated hitter by Mitch Garver when it was his turn to hit again, as Nelson pointed out.
Dan Wilson, the interim manager, did not reveal whether Robles' replacement was due to the play or being hit by Gil's first pitch of the game. When asked about stealing home, he did not criticize the veteran.
"Wilson stated that Vic is an aggressive player, and that is part of the game. However, he acknowledged that Vic's aggressive play sometimes puts him in dangerous situations. Wilson explained that Vic recently tried to get his hand in something, but it didn't go as planned. Despite this, Wilson expressed hope that Vic would recover and be able to play safely tomorrow."
As one X user wrote, "I see why Robles thought he could pull it off, but not now, man."
The Yankees defeated the Nationals 10-1, with Judge having four RBIs and Soto and Dominguez each hitting home runs.
The Mariners fell three games behind a wild card spot in the American League as the Yankees extended their AL East lead with the Giants' 10-0 victory over the Orioles.
