Twelve California sports teams join forces to aid those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.
The city has been devastated by the wildfires.
More than $8 million has been pledged by twelve sports teams from Los Angeles and Anaheim to aid victims affected by the ongoing wildfires in the region.
The joint statement made by the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Galaxy, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Sparks, Anaheim Ducks, Angel City FC and LAFC announced the news.
The funds will be used to aid victims and those battling the fires, with the American Red Cross, Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Fire Foundation, Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, California Community Foundation Wildlife Recovery Fund, Team Rubicon, and other local animal rescue organizations being designated as beneficiaries of the donations.
Fanatics merchandise worth $3 million will be given to Los Angeles residents who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the fires. The teams, in partnership with their own foundations, teamed up with Fanatics and the Fanatics Foundation to provide the gear. Evacuated victims can participate in the distribution events on Jan. 17 at Dodger Stadium, SoFi Stadium and BMO Stadium.
Wildfires have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and the burning of thousands of structures. Additionally, several games have been canceled or relocated due to the wildfires.
The playoff game between the Rams and the Minnesota Vikings, originally scheduled to take place at the Rams' home stadium on Monday night, was relocated to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The Lakers had a game postponed last week due to fires, and they announced Monday night that their game against the San Antonio Spurs would be dedicated to the Los Angeles community.
"Lakers head coach J.J. Redick reaffirmed the team's commitment to Los Angeles in a news release, stating that they recognize the impact of the current situation on the community and are committed to helping people as much as possible."
Officials warned earlier Monday the threat to the area is not over.
Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley stated that we are not yet in the clear and we must remain vigilant.
"The Los Angeles City Fire Department has maximized its resource capabilities and response capabilities as the increasing wind event is upon us, with all available resources being staffed and strategically pre-positioned engine strike teams and task forces ready for rapid response to any new fire that breaks out in the city."
