Troy Aikman criticizes the Cowboys for letting Mike McCarthy go.
After 5 seasons, McCarthy left Dallas.
On Monday, Troy Aikman, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, criticized the Dallas Cowboys after they dismissed head coach Mike McCarthy.
According to multiple reports, McCarthy and the Cowboys parted ways after failing to agree on the length of the contract. McCarthy's deal was set to expire on Tuesday, and the Cowboys will have to look for a new head coach later than expected.
Aikman broke down the move on Monday night.
"I believed Mike McCarthy would be the head coach, so today's news that he won't be part of the game is quite unexpected. It seems like there isn't a clear plan in place," he remarked before the playoff match between the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings.
The Cowboys are a high-profile team, and whoever becomes their head coach will receive a lot of attention. However, most football coaches want to take over on their own terms, which can be challenging.
"I played for the Dallas Cowboys for 12 years and wish them well. While I appreciate the job, I'm not sure it's the most coveted position."
Aikman stated that it appeared "reasonable" that ex-offensive coordinator Kellen Moore would be a possibility for the head-coaching role. Nevertheless, he emphasized that whoever filled the position might not necessarily be an exact match for themselves.
Before the 2020 season, McCarthy became the head coach of the Cowboys, replacing Jason Garrett who had been in charge for a decade. Despite going 6-10 in his first season, McCarthy experienced some success when the team was healthy.
Since 2021, Dallas has won two division titles and made the playoffs every year, but they have yet to return to the NFC Championship, which they last achieved in 1995 when they won the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys were unable to recover from the early end of Dak Prescott's 2024 season, resulting in a 7-10 record.
