Trevor Lawrence Apologizes for Hit on Azeez Al-Shaair, Who Calls Out 'Racist and Islamophobic Fans'
Al-Shaair criticized journalists for seeking to portray a "villain."
On Monday morning, Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair spoke out about the criticism he received for the hit he gave to Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, which resulted in a concussion.
In the aftermath of the hit, Al-Shaair criticized reporters and those who examined his pro-Palestinian cleats.
I have always played the game with maximum effort, never with the intention of causing harm. Anyone who knows me knows that. My objective is to hit you as hard as possible, but I hope you can still get up and continue playing. After the game, I want to return home to my family unharmed because it's not personal. It's just a competition. We are both striving to achieve the same goal, which is to provide for our families.
I sincerely did not notice Trevor sliding until it was too late. It all happens in a flash. I apologize to Trevor for what happened. Before the game, we spoke, and I expressed my excitement about seeing him back on the field and wished him well. I would never want to cause any player harm, especially one who was hit "late" or "unnecessarily." I understand why Trevor's teammates would defend him in such a situation.
"I have been called every name in the book by reporters, racist and Islamophobic fans, and others, but you don't know my heart or character. God knows my intentions, and anyone who has been a teammate or friend of mine can attest to my heart."
Lawrence's head and neck area were hit by Al-Shaair, leading to a brawl and the ejection of Jarrian Jones from the Jaguars' 23-20 win over the Texans.
Jaguars players defended Lawrence and called Al-Shaair’s hit "dirty."
Lawrence gave a health update later Sunday.
"I appreciate all the prayers and support from those who reached out to me. I'm now feeling better and at home. Thank you for your kindness."
