Travis Kelce prioritized winning over targets in the face of criticism about his low offensive output.
This week, criticism has been directed towards Kelce.
Despite Travis Kelce's slow start in his 12th season with the Kansas City Chiefs, the team has begun the season with an undefeated record.
Almost every NFL analyst and sports pundit has criticized Kelce, despite his eight catches for 69 yards. Some have criticized his off-field exploits, his relationship with Taylor Swift, and his age.
Kelce is a nine-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro selection for a reason, as both Reid and Mahomes have stated that defenses have been playing him tighter.
In the Wednesday episode of "New Heights," Kelce discussed his play concerns during the first three games of the season.
Coach Reid and Pat both acknowledged that we're working to improve our game performance, and that we're not playing at our best," he said. "I believe everyone can clean up the mistakes, especially my drop in the fourth quarter, which was a crucial third down. Making plays in big moments is the most important thing for me.
"With the current state of defenses, I am not getting many opportunities to make plays down the field. However, I am not using this as an excuse. Instead, I am focusing on improving my game and helping the team succeed. In the past, I have been a valuable weapon for us, and I plan to continue to be that moving forward. We know what we need to do to improve this week as we head west to play the Chargers. I am excited for the challenge and our current 3-0 record is a testament to our hard work and dedication."
Kelce stated that he is not worried about the number of targets he is receiving. In three games, he has 12 targets, which is the second-most on the team, behind Rashee Rice's 29.
Whatever it is," Kelce stated, "It’s football, baby. I’m not getting caught up in the targets and all that. I just want to have a successful offense, and I think Pat’s doing a great job of finding the open guy and making the right decisions right now. It’s a new offense, new players, new pieces, and we’re just figuring out how to have success throughout the season.
"Throughout the season, you will encounter ups and downs as an offense, and it is crucial to ensure that all mistakes are cleared up and communication is effective. Coach Reid and Pat Mahomes excel in this area."
The Los Angeles Chargers will face the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend, giving Kelce another opportunity to increase his statistics.
