Travis Hunter is criticized by Deion Sanders for deactivating social media after comments about his fiancée.
Sanders stated that Hunter's social media accounts have sponsorships and endorsements.
Deion Sanders, the head football coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, spoke about Travis Hunter's decision to remove his social media accounts after receiving criticism about his fiancée, Leanna Lenee.
On Dec. 23, days after winning the Heisman Trophy, Hunter and Lenee's Instagram accounts were deactivated. Social media discussions about the event included several harsh criticisms of Hunter and Lenee as a couple. However, Hunter's account has since been reactivated.
In an interview on the "Tamron Hall Show," Hunter's situation was discussed, and Sanders shared his reaction.
"Hunter's deactivation caused me pain," Sanders stated. "The enemy wants you to stop."
Hunter's social media activity is likely directly tied to endorsements, as he is a former college and future pro athlete with an NIL valuation of $5.2 million, according to On3.com.
"Sanders stated, "You have endorsements and sponsors who want you to promote their product. We need to act now.""
Sanders criticized Hunter for backing down and warned that his response would make him vulnerable to "attacks."
"When someone remains stationary, it presents an opportunity to strike, and I detest the stillness of that. Continue to move. Do not allow the enemy to catch you while you are stationary and wallowing in self-pity," Sanders stated, emphasizing that this was the advice he gave to Hunter regarding the situation.
During a Twitch live stream, Hunter revealed that his fiancée cried and drank due to the backlash.
Lenee posted a video on her TikTok account on Dec. 16 in an attempt to put an end to the negativity.
Lenee stated in an eight-minute clip that she was both emotionally and mentally exhausted, and had witnessed others attempting to portray her as someone she was not.
She also tackled the criticism regarding her reaction to Hunter's Heisman Trophy win.
Lenee remained seated after Hunter was named the 2024 Heisman recipient, but Deion Sanders prompted her to stand up. Lenee briefly embraced Hunter before sitting back down during the audience's standing ovation.
Lenee appeared to be seated while Hunter greeted and posed for photos with fans at an event in New York City the day after the Heisman ceremony. Some fans speculated about Lenee's mood during the event and even proposed that she seemed unhappy.
As soon as I saw Travis get up, I thought it was appropriate to stand up, greet him, and congratulate him.
As Coach Prime was being filmed by a camera in front of him, I realized that the moment would be shared online and I felt uncomfortable being captured on camera. So, I sat down.
"I intentionally stepped out of the camera to allow them to have their moment. It was simply that. No one instructed me to stand up or join in the celebration. I was just sitting there, crying, taking it all in. I was thrilled for him, but I wanted the focus to be on him and his family."
Sheduer Sanders, the quarterback of the Buffaloes, has also commented on the controversy surrounding Hunter. He urged critics to refrain from commenting on Hunter's personal life.
"Athletes, entertainers, artists, and others who are genuinely interested in reaching out to Trav should know how to contact him or someone around him. However, it seems that many are simply posting to appear cool on social media rather than actually trying to connect with Trav."
Hunter and Lenee's engagement was publicly confirmed earlier this year.
Hunter is projected to be a top selection in the upcoming NFL Draft.
