The Vikings-Rams playoff game has been relocated from Los Angeles due to wildfires.
This week, the third game in Los Angeles has been affected.
The NFL announced on Thursday that the playoff game between the Vikings and Rams, originally slated for Southern California, will now take place in Arizona.
On Wednesday, the NFL unveiled its backup plan, and the wild-card game on Monday night will take place at the Arizona Cardinals' stadium.
This week, three games in Los Angeles have been postponed due to the flames: a Kings game and two Lakers games.
In consultation with public officials, participating clubs, and the NFLPA, the NFL moved the game "in the interest of public safety."
The game's start time remains at 8 p.m. ET.
Despite having a scheduled off day on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Chargers, who share SoFi Stadium and are heading to Houston for a wild-card game on Saturday, restricted players' time outside during practice due to poor air quality.
In 2003, the Dolphins and Chargers played in Glendale due to wildfires in San Diego. In 2020, the 49ers played three "home" games there during the COVID season.
In the Los Angeles area, several active wildfires, including the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, have caused significant damage to communities, including Pacific Palisades and Altadena. These fires have burned nearly 30,000 acres during a Santa Ana wind event, resulting in at least 130,000 people being under evacuation orders. Tragically, at least five people have been killed in the fires, and over 1,000 buildings have been destroyed.
The wildfires this week have highlighted the problem of insurers refusing to take on new policies or renew existing ones in California communities at high risk of wildfires, which has been criticized by prominent entertainment figures.
Since May 5, Los Angeles has not received at least one-tenth of an inch of rain, according to The Los Angeles Times.
