The security team of Colorado's football team has disclosed that Deion Sanders received a "very credible threat" before the game this season.
Since his time at Jackson State, Michael Rhodes has been part of Sanders' security team.
In just three seasons, Colorado coach Deion Sanders has become a Buffaloes icon and a polarizing figure to some, with his security team reporting that he has been subjected to multiple threats due to his fame.
In the latest season of "Coach Prime," officer Michael Rhodes disclosed that Sanders received a "very credible threat" prior to a game during the 2024 season.
Rhodes stated in the second episode that he receives a substantial amount of mail, packages, and gifts daily as he put on gloves to review Sanders' mail.
"To avoid any potential hazardous material, we wear gloves while carefully going through the mail, as the individual receiving it has stated publicly that he receives a lot of death threats and hate mail."
Rhodes served as a member of Jackson State's campus police for about 10 years before being asked to be part of Sanders' security detail. When Sanders got a job at Colorado, he asked Rhodes to come with him.
Since then, Rhodes has had his hands full.
In the episode, he stated that prior to the Sept. 14 game against Colorado State, they received threats about individuals attempting to harm Coach.
"Two individuals posed a credible threat to Coach, prompting the need for multiple law enforcement agencies, including the SWAT team, CSUPD, and Boulder PD, to be present before, during, or after the game."
During games, Rhodes keeps his head on a swivel, scanning the crowd and stadium for any potential threats.
"Coach is not loved by everyone. The numerous death threats make it difficult to identify individuals. My sole responsibility is to ensure Coach's safety and well-being so that he can lead the team to victory."
Despite a blowout loss to BYU in the Alamo last month, the Buffaloes ended the 2024 season on a high note.
In 2020, Colorado made their first Bowl game appearance in years and sold out every home game for the past two seasons, a first in their 134-year history. Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy and is expected to be a first-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, along with Shedeur Sanders.
