The NFL suspends Azeez Al-Shaair of the Texans for three games following a hit on Trevor Lawrence.
The NFL league stated that your ongoing disregard for NFL playing rules endangers not only your own health and safety but also that of your opponents.
The NFL suspended Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for three games after he delivered a late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, resulting in a concussion, during their game on Sunday.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan wrote a lengthy letter to Al-Shaair, stating that he would be suspended without pay for the hit he made, which was deemed "unacceptable and a serious violation of the playing rules."
The video shows you striking the head/neck area of Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence after he clearly goes down in a feet-first slide. You led with your forearm and helmet and delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of your opponent when you had time and space to avoid such contact.
Al-Shaair was involved in the on-field brawl that occurred after the hit, as Runyan pointed out.
"You engaged in a brawl and escalated it by pulling an opponent down to the ground by his facemask. After being disqualified for the hit and your unsportsmanlike acts, you removed your helmet and reengaged with your opponent while walking down and across the field, which led to another physical confrontation near the end zone."
Al-Shaair's "lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football" does not "align with the NFL's core values," according to Runyan, who found it "troubling."
"Your disregard for NFL playing rules endangers both your health and safety and will not be tolerated."
