The NFL has named a veteran referee to lead the officiating crew for Super Bowl LIX.
Ron Torbert will be part of a crew that will make Super Bowl history.
The Super Bowl LIX officiating crew has been set for New Orleans on Feb. 9, but the NFL conference championship games have not yet been played.
Ron Torbert, the seasoned referee who led a crew in Super Bowl LVI where the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, will return for the "Big Game" at the Caesars Superdome.
Boris Cheek is the only member of Torbert's crew with Super Bowl experience.
Mike Morton, an umpire, has previously attended the Super Bowl as a player. He was part of the St. Louis Rams team in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Ben Austro of Football Zebras predicts that Morton will make history as the first person to both play and officiate in the Super Bowl.
The rest of the crew, including judge Max Causey, line judge Mark Stewart, field judge Mearl Robinson, back judge Jonah Monroe, and replay official Kevin Brown, is down.
The Super Bowl typically features officials with at least five years of experience, but Morton and Causey are only in their third seasons officiating.
Since 2010, Torbert has been working NFL games, starting as a back judge and progressing to a referee in 2014.
During the 2024 season, Torbert received slightly more than one penalty (1.03) and gained an average of 11.40 more yards.
This weekend, Torbert and his crew will determine which two teams they will be officiating.
The NFC Championship game will commence with the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles facing off at Lincoln Financial Field to decide who will represent the conference in New Orleans.
The NFC East regular-season series between the Commanders and their opponents ended in a split, with Jayden Daniels, the Commanders' rookie sensation, leading his team to a game-winning drive at home.
The latest chapter of the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills will be played at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs have won postseason games against the Bills in their home stadium.
