The NCAA fined Marshall for withdrawing from a college football bowl game.
The Marshall Thundering Herd was fined $100,000 by the Sun Belt for not participating in the Independence Bowl in December.
The Sun Belt Conference stated that while Marshall adhered to the medical model and best practice guidance, the nature and timing of their decision to cancel the game were detrimental to the conference, Army, the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, the American Athletic Conference, and ESPN.
Although he received a fine, Christian Spears, the athletic director of Marshall, maintained his support for the choice to withdraw from the game.
"Spears stated that it was not possible to release 41 student-athletes onto the field in good conscience. He emphasized that the health and safety of the student athletes would always be a top priority. However, he acknowledged that a sincere and formal apology was necessary."
The Sun Belt championship was won by Marshall, who finished the regular season with a record of 10-3 and won their last seven games.
Marshall withdrew from the game after more than 25 players jumped into the transfer portal following Huff's departure to Southern Miss.
Tony Gibson, the offensive coordinator from NC State, was appointed as Marshall's new head coach.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
