The NBA postponed the home games of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday due to the wildfires in Southern California.
The San Antonio Spurs were scheduled to visit the Lakers while the Charlotte Hornets were set to visit the Clippers.
The league has not yet announced makeup dates for the two games, and it is unclear if more games will be affected by the fires, as both teams have home games scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, and the Lakers have another home game on Friday. The two teams are also scheduled to play each other in Inglewood, California, on Jan. 19, with the Clippers hosting.
The NBA, Clippers, and Lakers organizations have been in touch with local officials in Los Angeles and Inglewood regarding the ongoing situation in the area and the postponed games will not take away from the wildfire response efforts, the league stated.
On Tuesday night, Lakers coach JJ Redick's family's rental home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed by wildfires, leaving many of their belongings in ruins.
"Redick told reporters that he was not ready for what he saw. "It’s complete devastation and destruction," he said. "I had to go a different way to the house, but I went through most of the village, and it’s all gone. I don’t think you can ever prepare yourself for something like that. Our home is gone.""
On Friday, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association, the players' union, made a $1 million donation to aid the relief efforts of the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen, and other organizations for the victims of the disaster.
The league announced that the donation was intended to aid those affected by the disaster, and it is collaborating with the Lakers and Clippers to provide long-term assistance and rebuilding initiatives.
The Lakers' game against the Hornets scheduled for Thursday was postponed, but no rescheduling date has been announced yet.
The Lakers will host the Spurs on Monday, while the Clippers will host the Heat. On Wednesday, the Lakers will host the Heat and the Clippers will host the Nets. The Lakers will also host the Nets on Friday.
