The initial 12-team College Football Playoff rankings have been unveiled, with Oregon occupying the top position.
The College Football Playoff commences on December 20th.
The first 12-team College Football Playoff rankings are being released in the United States on Tuesday, marking a significant event.
The committee has decided to increase the number of teams in the playoff from four to twelve after ten seasons. Now that the first rankings have been released, here's a refresher.
The top four seeds, as conference champions or leaders, will receive first-round byes in the playoffs, while the next four teams, selected through at-large bids, will host bracket-style playoff games (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, and 8 vs. 9).
Although the committee continues to rank the teams in order, the bracket seeding may not accurately reflect the true rankings.
The College Football Playoff committee has released its first 12-team bracket.
Automatic bids
1. Oregon (9-0, 6-0; Big Ten leader)
The Ducks are dominating the season and Dillon Gabriel is a top contender for the Heisman Trophy. Their victory over Michigan has propelled them to No. 1, but Indiana also has an impressive record.
2. Georgia (7-1, 5-1; SEC leader)
Despite their lone loss of the season, Texas A&M's schedule remains challenging. This weekend, they face TK Ole Miss on the road, followed by Tennessee. With a conference record of 7-2 and 5-1 in-conference, Texas A&M is still behind in the conference.
The third-ranked team in the country has the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten because Ohio State, the current second-ranked team, doesn't lead the conference.
3. Miami (9-0, 5-0; ACC leader)
The Hurricanes' offense scored 53 points, leaving them as the only undefeated team in the conference. Miami is ranked fourth in the country, but they receive the third seed due to the automatic bid system.
4. BYU (8-0, 5-0; Big 12 leader)
The Cougars, like Miami, are the only undefeated team in the new-look Big 12. However, unlike the 'Canes, the committee has their seed higher than their actual ranking in the country, placing them at No. 9 overall.
At-large bids:
Ohio State, with a record of 7-1 and 4-1, is ranked No. 2 by the committee. However, since they do not lead their conference, they are the fifth seed in the bracket.
6. Texas (7-1, 3-1; ranked fifth in the country)
7. Penn State (7-1, 4-1; ranked sixth)
8. Tennessee (7-1, 4-1; ranked seventh)
9. Indiana (9-0, 6-0; ranked eighth)
10. Notre Dame (7-1)
11. Alabama (6-2, 3-2)
12. Boise State (7-1, 4-0)
On the bubble
Ole Miss is likely to enter the top 12 with a win over Georgia this weekend, along with SMU, Texas A&M, and LSU.
Deion Sanders' Colorado team, currently ranked No. 20, has a relatively favorable schedule in the final stretch.
The national championship will be played one month after the first round of the playoffs begins on Dec. 20.
