The former Dallas Cowboys NFL mascot reveals that the job was not on their bucket list and shares their experience as the "face" of the brand.
During the 2022-2023 season, Eric Aaberg served as the mascot for the Dallas Cowboys.
The "Rowdy" mascot suit has been the subject of much speculation, and now a former college and NFL player has revealed his experience of wearing the suit during the 2022-2023 Dallas Cowboys season.
Eric Aaberg, a former mascot for the Dallas Cowboys, shared with Planet Chronicle Digital in a Zoom interview that mascots are not well-known and he wanted to change that.
He now uses TikTok to discuss his experience as the "face" of the Cowboys and the challenges of being Rowdy at 22 while juggling college studies.
By chance, Aaberg's journey to becoming Rowdy the mascot at the University of Texas at Dallas began with an invitation to join the cheer team.
Aaberg stated that being a mascot was not on their college bucket list.
At first, he was hesitant to take on the role, but eventually he accepted it and remained the mascot for five years.
Aaberg's selection as Rowdy, the mascot for the Dallas Cowboys, was a result of his becoming Temoc. The Cowboys contacted UT Dallas to express their interest in Aaberg becoming their mascot.
Aaberg stated that the tryout process was essentially just one interview, and his prior experience in working as a mascot and creating social media content aided him in the process.
Aaberg, after being hired and attending one event, became Rowdy, a character with a significant presence beyond merely hyping up crowds and posing for photos with fans.
"Mascots and cheerleaders are not only present at games but also attend numerous corporate events, with over 300 appearances throughout the year, sometimes seven times a week, five times a week, or even 10 times a week, as stated by Aaberg to Planet Chronicle Digital."
He was a college student when he got the job as a mascot performer for the team, but the schedule was still packed with multiple performers.
Aaberg's typical call time for game days was 6 a.m., and his other responsibilities included driving the "Rowdy van," transporting the mascot costume, and attending up to four-hour corporate events.
"In essence, being a mascot is merely a marketing strategy. You become the human embodiment of the brand," Aaberg stated, frequently creating social media content featuring Rowdy while working with the team.
To become a mascot for a college or professional sports team, Aaberg believes that one should possess qualities such as passion, energy, and dedication to achieving success.
Being passionate about school spirit, wanting to put smiles on people's faces, creating Tiktok trends, and having a reason to wear a suit are all important factors, according to Aaberg.
