The Colts have named Anthony Richardson as their starting quarterback in a sudden switch-up: "We've always had faith in him."
Anthony Richardson was pulled from the game last month after deciding to withdraw.
On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts made Anthony Richardson the starting quarterback, two weeks after replacing him with the second-year signal caller who "tapped out" of a game against the Houston Texans due to fatigue.
Prior to Sunday's game against the New York Jets, head coach Shane Steichen unexpectedly declared a change in strategy and was met with several inquiries regarding the sudden reversal.
Richardson's attention to detail in every aspect of his work, including classrooms, walkthroughs, practice, and weight room, must be at a higher standard, as Steichen emphasized during their initial talks.
"Two weeks ago, discussions with him were held, and those were the conversations that took place. Since then, he has made significant progress in those areas. He has become a pro's pro, making big-time strides. However, he is not yet a finished product, and it is my job, along with the rest of the coaching staff, to help him reach that level of expertise. Despite this, he is an incredibly talented individual."
Steichen stated that the objective was to keep Richardson as the starting quarterback, even though he announced Flacco as Sunday's starter just two days prior. He revealed that the plan is to have Richardson continue as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
"Despite not having lost faith in him, he has shown progress and will be our starter again."
Steichen was asked about the reason behind benching Richardson, specifically if it was due to tardiness or lack of effort. He replied that it was about taking it to a higher level.
Richardson's time with the Colts has not been the dream he was hoping for, despite the organization viewing him as their franchise quarterback, as Steichen stated.
Richardson, who was drafted fourth overall, missed his third NFL start due to a concussion. Two games later, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.
This season, he played in the first four games but missed two due to a hip injury. He came back for two more starts before being benched.
"Richardson stated on Wednesday that he had demonstrated his commitment to being a professional by expressing his willingness to make sacrifices for the team. He added that the past two weeks had helped him gain a better understanding of himself and his capabilities, for which he was grateful."
