The Chiefs released kicker Matthew Wright following a game-winning field goal by Harrison Butker.
In addition to being named AFC special teams player of the week, Wright displayed remarkable heroics.
In their 19-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Kansas City Chiefs' kicker, Matthew Wright, was the star of the show.
On Wednesday, Wright was named AFC special teams player-of-the-week due to his four field goals, including the game-winning one as time expired, and an extra point.
On Saturday, the Chiefs released Wright despite his heroics, as Harrison Butker returned from injury reserve.
Butker was absent from four games to undergo surgery to fix his left knee's meniscus and is now fully recovered and prepared to play again.
In two games, Wright had kicked and made 8-9 of his field goal attempts and both extra point attempts for the Chiefs.
The most crucial kick in Wright's brief Chiefs tenure was the final one he made. Mahomes had led the Chiefs into the Chargers' territory with the team trailing 17-16, giving Wright an opportunity to win the game.
The 31-year-old field goal was nailed by Wright, but he first missed it before smoking it off the left upright and in, causing a momentary scare for Chiefs fans.
In his five-year career, the 28-year-old has played for five teams, including his third stint with the Chiefs during the 2022-2023 season.
Wright has been a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers in two separate stints, as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers.
This season, Wright has played in three games, all of which resulted in victories for his team.
In his career, Wright has a field goal success rate of 51-59 and an extra point success rate of 40-42. He plans to seek a new team in free agency.
On Sunday, the Browns will face the Chiefs in Cleveland, where Butker will make his first game comeback after an injury.
