The authenticity issue of LSU coach Brian Kelly began with his "fake accent" and has escalated with a table slam and a statement from an ex-QB.
During the week, Kelly's fit of rage went viral.
During a press conference following LSU's loss to USC, football coach Brian Kelly became enraged and slammed a table with his fist, resulting in a viral video.
The incident caused Kelly to become a viral meme, and his authenticity was once again questioned.
On his show "Don't @ Me" on Thursday, Danny Kanell, a former Florida State star quarterback who played in the NFL for the New York Giants, discussed Kelly with OutKick's Dan Dakich.
Kelly is disliked by some people for various reasons, as Kanell admitted before meeting him in person and getting to know the coach.
Kanell stated that people generally desire authenticity, meaning they want to see individuals be true to themselves. He emphasized that coaches like Bill Belichick and Nick Saban should consistently exhibit their hard-nosed coaching style, while coaches like Lane Kiffin should consistently showcase their fun and trash-talking personalities.
"Brian Kelly's fake accent, when he said "My family is down here," made me think he was trying to appeal to voters in different regions of the country."
Even as USC scored the go-ahead touchdown in the closing moments, Kanell criticized quarterback Grant Nussmeier for his play in the loss against the Trojans, pointing to the table slam.
"Garrett Nussmeier played well in the game, but people may not like him because he could have made a few plays and threw his teammates under the bus," Kanell said.
"It seems like he may be a politician's son. However, there's something about him that feels inauthentic. I believe this is why many people dislike him."
Planet Chronicle Digital contacted LSU seeking a response to Kanell's comments.
