Taylor Fritz, an American player, aims to make history by reaching the US Open final after defeating Frances Tiafoe in a grueling match.
Since 2003, Fritz could be the first American to win a men's Grand Slam singles title.
On Friday night, Taylor Fritz's name would be associated with history, regardless of the outcome.
Since 2009, Fritz, 26, has been the first American tennis player to reach a men's Grand Slam singles final and the first to advance to the U.S. Open final since 2006 after defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in five sets.
""I can't wait to come out and give everything I can in the final," Fritz said during a post-match interview."
Since Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2009, Fritz is the first U.S. men's player to reach a major final.
If he defeats world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in his match, he will become the first American to win a men's Grand Slam singles title in 21 years, since Roddick achieved this feat at the U.S. Open.
Fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium cheered passionately for Fritz following the match, with the future of history hanging in the balance.
"He stated, while addressing his fans, "The reason behind my dedication is to achieve my goals.""
Fritz won his first career Grand Slam final by defeating Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and 6-1.
""He was so overwhelming from the baseline that I tried to stay in it and fight, and I told myself that if I didn't give it everything I had, I would regret it for a long time," he said of Tiafoe."
The men’s final is slated for Sunday.
On Saturday afternoon, Jessica Pegula will defend the U.S. Open women's title for the Americans against Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
