Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots, takes responsibility for the firing of Jerod Mayo: "The whole situation is on me."
The Patriots are swiftly submitting interview requests for their head coach position to the NFL, following in the footsteps of other teams.
On Sunday night, Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, released a statement regarding Jerod Mayo's firing, stating that it was the appropriate decision to make after only one season as head coach.
Belichick and Kraft have ended their partnership, prompting Kraft to initiate a new head coaching search for the 2024 season.
Though he had not yet discussed the plan, Kraft shouldered the blame after another 4-13 campaign.
On Monday, via ESPN, Kraft admitted responsibility for the situation and expressed his regret for putting Jerod in an untenable position. He acknowledged Jerod's potential as a head coach but believed he needed more time before taking the job.
"Although I'm a fan of this team, I now need to search for a coach who can lead us to the playoffs and potentially win championships."
Teams and the Patriots are actively reaching out to potential head coach candidates.
The Detroit Lions have been contacted by New England about a formal request to interview offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Additionally, Kraft was questioned about Mike Vrabel, a former player of his who has more experience as an NFL head coach than Mayo, who is currently leading a team for the first time.
"Kraft stated that he would respond to questions about Vrabel after evaluating all potential candidates. He emphasized the importance of interviewing as many individuals as possible to ensure they could help the team achieve their desired outcome."
During the coaching transition, Kraft's son, Jonathan, as well as senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, will be involved. Additionally, Kraft's front office will remain the same.
On Sunday, Joe Milton III's impressive performance against the Buffalo Bills cost the Patriots the top pick in the NFL Draft, leaving them to select fourth overall in April.
Mayo informed Kraft of the decision to coach the Patriots to a final victory to end the season, and Kraft didn't seem bothered by it.
"Kraft stated that Mayo's reaction to his firing was difficult for him because he had a lot of affection for him. Despite this, he believed in Mayo's potential for success and thought that with more experience, he would achieve it. Mayo was a gentleman and accepted the firing graciously."
