Riley Gaines swims to shore from Alcatraz with the 'most impressive Navy Seals'
A roughly 1.25-mile swim is the distance.
Perhaps the Anglin brothers should have sought advice from Riley Gaines. (Or perhaps not, we'll never know.)
On Friday, Gaines, the former NCAA swimmer who advocates for fairness in women's sports, posted on X that she successfully swam Alcatraz.
The notorious prison, now a museum, is located in San Francisco's bay and is approximately 1.25 miles away from the shore.
"Swam Alcatraz with a group of Navy Seals and combat veterans, honoring those who risk their lives for our country. It was a fun (and chilly) way to show appreciation for our troops. God bless our military!" she shared.
Although, I'm not sure the general public would be interested in seeing him in a Speedo.
The prison, which opened in 1934, didn't last even 30 years.
Although there were 14 documented attempted escapes, Alcatraz was categorized as practically escape-proof due to its distance to shore.
The most infamous escape from Alcatraz occurred on June 11, 1962, when John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris made their daring escape, which later inspired the movie "Escape from Alcatraz."
Despite the FBI's conclusion that the escapees drowned due to harsh conditions, it was the one who reached shore and survived that was deemed the most likely to have been successful.
The three inmates carved a path to freedom from their own cells and fashioned crude, paper-based masks.
The "Escape from Alcatraz" triathlon's swimming route is based on the final attempted escape from the prison six months ago.
