Report: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin involved in negotiations with bears about possible trade
ESPN reports that the Steelers turned down the Bears' inquiry.
In November, the Chicago Bears fired Matt Eberflus as their head coach following a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions, where he was heavily criticized for poor time management.
Eberflus' three-year tenure in the Windy City was marked by a series of last-second losses and culminated in a six-game losing streak. Thomas Brown was appointed interim head coach.
The Bears are currently looking for the franchise's next head coach and have already interviewed several candidates, in accordance with general manager Ryan Poles' promise to conduct a thorough search.
A recent ESPN report revealed that the team considered acquiring Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin through a trade to fill its coaching vacancy.
ESPN reports that the Steelers rejected the Bears' request to speak with and potentially trade for the Super Bowl-winning coach.
Tomlin's contract reportedly includes a no-trade clause, and he recently responded to questions about potential trade offers with a simple message: "Save your time."
Despite finishing the regular season with a 10-7 record, the Steelers ended their season on a four-game losing streak, which marked Tomlin's first losing streak below .500.
The Steelers have not won a playoff game in eight years, as they were knocked out of the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round in 2010.
Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator of the lions, is reportedly one of the most sought-after candidates during this hiring cycle. It was announced earlier this week that the Bears interviewed him.
Several coaches, including Arthur Smith, Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, and former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, were also interviewed.
Although the Bears finished the season with a 5-12 record, their roster boasts talent at crucial positions. The next head coach will have to focus on developing quarterback Caleb Williams, the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as working with wide receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore.
Tremaine Edmunds and Jaylon Johnson are both talented players in the NFL.
The Bears, Jets, Saints, Jaguars, and Raiders are still searching for their head coaches, while the New England Patriots quickly filled their vacancy by hiring Mike Vrabel.
