Elizabeth, Matusz's mother, informed authorities that the ex-athlete was grappling with drug problems and had made statements such as "nothing is left for me" and "I used to have it all."

According to the Baltimore Banner, she informed the police that he had been clean for eight months prior to his death. Two days before his demise, on January 4th, Matusz was rushed to the emergency room due to unknown reasons. He was discharged that day and advised to seek a mental health professional. However, he was not admitted to a facility.

He died on Jan. 6.

The Orioles announced Matusz’s death last week.

From 2009 to 2016, Brian was a beloved member of our clubhouse in Birdland. His passion for baseball and our community was unmatched, and he dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could. He was a cherished teammate and always had a smile on his face.

"We are keeping Brian's family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this challenging period."

In 2010, he began as a full-time starter and ended up finishing fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting. He recorded 143 strikeouts and had a 10-12 record in 32 starts.

By 2012, he was demoted to the bullpen after missing two months of the 2011 regular season.
