Report: Caleb Williams should be benched, say bears veterans after offensive coordinator's dismissal.
The Bears' 3-game losing streak has been a challenge for Williams.
The Chicago Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron as their offense continues to struggle this season.
A new report suggests that the Bears believed they had more issues in the locker room than just Waldron.
On Tuesday, Tom Waddle, a former Bears receiver and current ESPN Chicago radio host, wrote that Bears players were not only pushing for Waldron to be relieved of his duties but also wanted Williams, the team's top pick, to be benched.
"After consulting with a few individuals familiar with the situation, players approached Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles to request a change in offensive coordinator," Waddle stated on X. "Additionally, some veteran players have requested that Tyson Bagent be given a starting role."
Last season, Bagent played well as an undrafted rookie, appearing in five games due to an injured Justin Fields. He had a 2-2 record as a starter, with three touchdowns, six interceptions, 859 yards, and a 65.7% completion rate.
Bagent ran for 109 yards on 23 attempts and scored two rushing touchdowns.
In the past week, Williams was tackled nine times while in possession of the ball and has displayed inconsistencies in his accuracy when he does manage to throw it. The Bears lost to the lowly New England Patriots, who had rookie Drake Maye quarterbacking their offense.
Despite Waldron's dismissal, Williams will remain the team's starter as Thomas Brown, the pass game coordinator, has taken over as offensive coordinator.
"This game has a lot to teach me, especially in terms of situational things," Williams said after the loss, as reported by the New York Post.
"Certainly, there are instances in every game where you wish you could redo a few passes. However, I believe that this game provided a valuable learning experience for me, particularly in certain situations where I could have performed better."
Despite a rocky start to his rookie season, Williams appeared to be finding his footing after the team won three straight games, including a four-touchdown performance in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Despite not finding the end zone through the air in the last three weeks, the Bears’ offense has yet to score a touchdown in back-to-back weeks.
In their next three games, the Bears will have a gauntlet in the NFC North, with Williams facing the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions in that order.
This season, Williams has thrown for 1,785 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 60.5% completion rate.
