Penguins release All-Star goaltender from contract after 18 months.
In 2023, the Penguins signed Tristan Jarry to a five-year, $26.875 million contract.
In July 2023, the Pittsburgh Penguins signed goalie Tristan Jarry to a five-year, $28.875 million contract.
Just 18 months later, the team placed Jarry on waivers.
This season, the two-time All-Star goalie has faced challenges, with a record of 8-7-4 and a goals against average of 3.32, as well as a save percentage of .886.
This season, the 29-year-old goalie has struggled with slow starts, conceding a goal on an opponent's first shot six times.
On Tuesday, Jarry conceded a shorthanded goal on the second shot he faced in the Penguins' 4-2 defeat to the Seattle Kraken.
Jarry had a difficult season last year, with a record of 19-25-5, a goals against average of 2.91, and a save percentage of .903.
Although Jarry faced difficulties in the previous season, he managed to lead the NHL in shutouts with six. However, this season, Jarry has not yet recorded a shutout.
Despite continuing to work hard, the results for Jarry did not show up.
Dubas stated that the player has consistently worked hard and there has been no question about it. However, the desired results have not been achieved on the ice. At this level, it is important to do what is right for both the player and the team.
Jarry, like the Penguins, have faced challenges this season, with a record of 18-20-8 and 44 points in 46 games, leaving them out of playoff contention.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are leading the team that is currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference by four points for the final wild-card spot.
As a result of Jarry's contract, it is unlikely that a team will pick him up on waivers, allowing him to be reassigned to the American Hockey League.
Jarry has spent his entire nine-year career with the Penguins, boasting a career save percentage of .910 and a career goals average against of 2.74.
The Penguins have two goalies, Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist, who have a combined record of 10-15-4 and a save percentage of .886 and .904, respectively, in 19 and eight games, respectively.
The Buffalo Sabres will host the Penguins in their next game at 7 p.m. ET on Friday.
