Ohio State players give thanks to God after winning the national college football championship.
Ohio State and Notre Dame players openly discussed their faith during the playoffs.
On Monday night, following their college football national championship victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Will Howard and Jack Sawyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes expressed their gratitude to God.
Ohio State's victory in the College Football Playoffs was a result of key plays made by Howard and Sawyer. Howard threw two touchdown passes against Notre Dame, including a clutch throw on third down to Jeremiah Smith that helped secure the win. Sawyer had three tackles in the game, including a scoop-and-score in the semifinals against Texas.
At Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the Kansas State transfer felt confident as confetti fell around him.
""Without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my teammates, family, and supporters back in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, I wouldn't be here today," Howard said."
Howard praised God again as he received the Offensive MVP Award.
""I must first give all glory and praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Indeed, I am grateful that God has given me the opportunity to be a Buckeye," he stated."
Sawyer looked dazed while discussing the team's return to school to win the national championship.
"The feeling I'm experiencing right now is the best I've ever had in my life. We all imagined this outcome when we decided to return - to execute our plan and end on this high note," he stated.
"We are grateful for God's gift of being able to go out and do what we do, even through the challenges. We know that He was with us every step of the way, and we overcame the adversity. This accomplishment feels so rewarding."
Cody Simon was named the Defensive MVP of the game and prioritized faith.
""We're grateful for the special thing the Lord did for this team," Simon said. "Everyone on this team contributed and I love every player here," he added, emphasizing the hard work they put in throughout the year."
Both teams’ faith was on full display coming into the championship.
Before the game, Riley Leonard, Notre Dame's quarterback, stated that the players' faith in God was what led them to the national title game.
I believe that things happen for a reason, not just for us, but also for Ohio State. I think we are the two main teams that publicly display our faith the most," he said, via Sports Michiana. "I'm not sure if this is some divine teaching or if it's just a coincidence.
"I am convinced that Jesus was watching over us during the entire season and had a purpose in elevating these two teams."
