OCD has become a part of Zane Gonzalez's identity after his viral pregame kick routine.
Washington advanced to the divisional round thanks to Gonzalez's 37-yard kick.
Zane Gonzalez has revealed his struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) following the capture of his pre-kick routine on television during the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round.
Gonzalez, a rookie with the Washington Commanders, was observed frequently adjusting his hair, socks, and helmet on and off.
Gonzalez scored a 37-yard field goal to give the Commanders a 23-20 win over the Bucs, and Washington will face the top-seeded Lions in the divisional round.
Gonzalez's actions were not just a sports superstition, but rather stemmed from his OCD.
According to Gonzalez, who spoke to The Washington Post, the situation makes his wife and family more upset than it does with him.
"I am accustomed to it. Everyone who knows or has seen me kick has witnessed me do it countless times. The attention I receive on a big stage on Sunday night, as a game-winner, is slightly more intense, I have learned. It is a part of who I am and what I endure, and I am the most aware of how bizarre it looks doing it. However, despite being conscious of it, I cannot resist it."
Gonzalez, who was diagnosed with the disorder during his childhood, has spoken out about his condition before, including in 2017 when he told ESPN that OCD makes him a perfectionist and more detail-oriented, but off the field, it's a pain in the butt.
The Arizona State kicker stated that he has implemented strategies to mitigate the effects of ADHD on his daily routine and applies those techniques to his game day preparation.
"I make an effort to keep my actions low-key and focused on getting the job done, while also mentally preparing myself for the field. The helmet is the final step I take before going out."
Gonzalez was not signed to the NFL in 2022 or 2023, but he was later signed to Washington's practice squad in November 2024 and later elevated to the active roster. He had a successful season, making 5 out of 7 field goals and 100% of his extra point attempts.
