Miami coach defends Cam Ward's decision to quit on the team after setting a touchdown record.
Cam Ward sat out during the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
Controversy was sparked when Cam Ward did not participate in the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
After breaking the Division I record for most passing touchdowns in a career (156), surpassing Case Keenum, Ward played the first half and sat the second.
Arguments were aplenty.
While some believed Ward's decision to participate in a meaningless bowl game as the No. 1 overall pick was a risk, others saw it as a selfish move solely for the record. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes lost, 32-31.
This week, his former head coach, Mario Cristobal, defended the future first-round pick who received both praise and criticism.
I don't feel the need to rush to refute false narratives and a lot of nonsense that people like to start because that's their way of doing their job," he said on Monday. "That's where it's at. That's where it's always been. Cam has been an exceptional, an elite, Miami Hurricane. As a competitor, as a player, as a teammate. He's elevated the profile and exposure of the University of Miami.
"He is leaving a lasting legacy that will influence future generations. As the best I've ever encountered, I eagerly anticipate observing him lead an NFL team to championships and watching him grace the fields on Sundays."
"Cristobal stated that he played a significant role in winning 10 games and having the opportunity to win every game. He set the standard for what is expected in the future, even though it may be challenging."
The Canes' chances of making the College Football Playoff were dashed after they lost to Syracuse in the final week of the regular season, despite previously controlling their own destiny in the ACC title game. If Ward had more to play for in December, the conversation may have ended differently on both sides.
The Tennessee Titans own the NFL Draft, and Ward and Shedeur Sanders are discussing their potential selection as the No. 1 pick.
