Matthew Stafford's wife contemplates the possibility of her husband's retirement following the Rams' loss to the Eagles: "We'll see."
NFL veteran Stafford completed his 16th season.
Kelly Stafford, wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, shared a reflective post on Instagram following her husband's team's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round on Sunday night.
As her husband completed his 16th NFL season, the thought of retirement naturally arose in the caption.
Kelly doesn't want Matthew to retire from the game he loves, despite her earlier statement that she could never get tired of watching him perform every week during the season.
"I can't express how proud I am with just words," Kelly wrote in her post's caption, accompanied by pictures of her husband and family. "Although I jest about us being old and worn out, the truth is, I could never grow tired of watching you out there or seeing our girls cheer for their daddy."
Kelly left some thoughts for Rams fans regarding her husband's potential retirement from football.
She wrote: "I'm uncertain if this is the conclusion or not... I suppose we'll discover the answer."
Matthew Stafford, who will turn 37 next month, stated after the 28-22 loss to the Eagles that he will "take some time to consider" his career options.
He stated via the New York Post that he felt he played well in the game.
Stafford's fourth year with the Rams ended with a playoff game where a potential game-winning drive ended with a 4th-and-long incompletion to his favorite target, second-year receiver Puka Nacua, on an overthrown ball to the boundary.
At Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Stafford completed 26 out of 44 passes for 324 yards, scoring two touchdowns. However, he was sacked five times, including a critical 3rd-and-2 takedown by Jalen Carter, which led to the final incompletion in the snowy conditions.
Despite Stafford's impressive performance this season, he still has room for improvement. He threw for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions, achieving a 65.8% completion rate over 16 games. Despite this, he went 10-6 in those contests, helping the Rams win the NFC West title and secure another playoff berth.
In the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Stafford as their first overall pick. Despite his desire to win a Super Bowl for the Motor City, Stafford found success in his first season with the Rams in 2021, earning the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
In January 2021, the Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff, resulting in both teams experiencing significant changes. While the Lions gained a new franchise quarterback to build around, the Rams utilized Stafford and their own arsenal to make a Super Bowl run that ultimately resulted in them winning the championship at their own stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Stafford's contract is valid for the next two seasons, and the organization, including head coach Sean McVay, wants him to fulfill it.
We will discover what the future holds for Stafford's NFL career during the upcoming offseason, as his wife had stated.
