The Lions won the NFC North title for the second consecutive season by defeating the Vikings, 31-9.

The Lions will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs for the first time in franchise history, in addition to winning the division championship.

The Vikings, ranked No. 5 as the top wild card team in the NFC, will face the Rams in Los Angeles next weekend instead of having a bye week.

The game was a standout, with two of the top offenses in the league facing off to decide the top seed and division title in just 60 minutes.

On Sunday night at Ford Field, a shootout did not occur, as the Lions' defense, led by Aaron Glenn, put immense pressure on Sam Darnold and the Vikings' offense.

In this pivotal game, the Lions utilized the NFL's leading touchdown scorer, Jahmyr Gibbs, who added four more to his total.

With David Montgomery out of the backfield, Gibbs gained more playing time and scored a 25-yard touchdown to give the Lions a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

In the first half, only one touchdown was scored, but Gibbs took Detroit's lead in the second half when Campbell went for it on fourth-and-2 from Minnesota's 10-yard line, and Goff tossed a ball to his wide-open back for a 10-yard score.

In the fourth quarter, after the Vikings failed to make a deep field goal, Gibbs discovered a new opportunity and gained 13 yards, significantly increasing the lead to 24-9.

Had Darnold seized his red zone opportunities, this game could have been much closer.

In the second quarter, Darnold brought the Vikings close to Detroit's goal line on the 5-yard line, but failed to score after making a few mistakes with his throws to Justin Jefferson and missing a wide-open Jordan Addison in the flat.

The Vikings' defense intercepted Goff twice, but Minnesota couldn't score from the seven-yard line, and Darnold made more poor throws.

Glenn constantly put pressure on Darnold, causing him to speed up his "quarterback clock" as he went through his progressions. As a result, Darnold had his lowest output of the season, finishing 18-for-41 for 166 yards, and the Vikings didn't score a touchdown all game.

Gibbs' fourth touchdown of the game, a 47-yard run that pushed him over 100 yards rushing on the night, sealed the victory for his team.

On fourth-and-2, the Lions convinced the Vikings to jump into the neutral zone. Gibbs then pushed his way into the end zone, dragging several Vikings defenders with him for a four-yard rush and his fourth touchdown of the night.

On his big night, Gibbs ran for 139 yards on 23 carries and added 31 yards through the air, while Amon-Ra St. Brown led the Lions with six catches for 77 yards.

Goff was 27-for-33 for 231 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

The 2024 NFL regular season has ended with the NFC North finish, and the playoffs will begin during Wild Card Weekend in a few days.
