Last year, Stefon Diggs of the Texans admitted that he was in a poor mental state prior to his breakup with the Bills.
In April, the Texans acquired Diggs through a trade.
NFL stars often find that a change of scenery can greatly improve their performance.
Stefon Diggs, a two-time All-Pro, may benefit from new surroundings in the 2024 season.
Despite agreeing to a four-year, $96 million contract extension with the Buffalo Bills in 2022, Diggs seemed unhappy with his situation in Western New York. Eventually, it became clear that the Bills and Diggs were headed toward a divorce. Now, the standout wide receiver is breaking his silence on how his breakup with the Bills came to fruition.
"Diggs admitted to GQ Sports that he was in the poorest mental state he had experienced since joining the league. He acknowledged that being in a bad mental state was not beneficial for him, so he knew changes had to be made."
Diggs' 2023 campaign began with promise, but he ended the year on a much slower pace. He recorded at least 100 receiving yards in five of the first six games, but only managed to surpass the 80 yards receiving mark on two occasions over the last 11 weeks of the regular season.
The Bills lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round. Diggs had 52 receiving yards in the game against the Steelers but only caught one ball for 7 yards in the divisional round.
Diggs mentioned the Bills' performance in the final stretch of the previous season as the reason for his eventual departure.
"The games looked different," Diggs said. "I take responsibility. I'm not afraid to admit it. I have big shoulders. But listen carefully. Pay attention to the game. Of course, there are plays I wish I could redo. But there are also plays that didn't go my way."
As the season progressed, Diggs remained uncertain about the reasons behind the decline in production.
"To succeed in getting the ball rolling, a lot of things need to go right. It's not possible to achieve 800 yards in the first eight games just by rolling out of bed. Your best receiver is the one who is doing that. You ask me about the last 10 games, but I only pay attention to what really happened and not what people try to make it seem like happened. For the last 10 games, I forgot how to play football."
The Bills front office signed veteran pass catchers Curtis Samuel and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, while Gabe Davis left the team to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In the second round of the April draft, Buffalo selected former Florida State wide receiver Keon Coleman.
""Our receiver room is like Baskin-Robbins with a lot of flavors," joked Bills general manager Brandon Beane."
