Lakers coach JJ Redick shares his emotional experience of losing his home in the wildfires.
'I haven't cried that intensely in a long time.'
JJ Redick, the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, is among the many residents in Los Angeles whose homes were destroyed by the wildfires that have swept through the region this week.
In Dallas for a game, Redick discovered the fires and learned that his family had evacuated.
On Friday, a day after a Lakers game at Crypto.com Arena was postponed, he shared his experience returning to Palisades and what he observed.
My wife got out early and saw the fire. She was with some people and headed to the airport. I picked up the kids from school and they're safe. That's all that matters.
"I visited the hotel, awoke at 7, and journeyed to Palisades. I felt compelled to witness it firsthand. I was not ready for what I encountered. The destruction and devastation were overwhelming. I had to alter my route to the house, but I passed through most of the village, and it was obliterated. I believe it's impossible to prepare oneself for something like this."
Redick's home was destroyed Thursday.
Redick, with an emotional tone, stated that they were renting for a year to determine their long-term location. All of their significant possessions, including 20 years of their relationship and 10 years of parenthood, were stored in that house. There are certain items that cannot be replaced and will forever remain irreplaceable.
Losing your home is a difficult experience, and it's not just about the material possessions. It's about processing the emotional and personal side of it. It's something that no one wants to go through, and it's a feeling that's hard to put into words. I haven't felt this way in a long time.
The Vikings-Rams NFL playoff game scheduled for Monday night was relocated from Inglewood to Arizona due to the devastating wildfires that have caused the loss of at least 10 lives, destroyed over 10,000 buildings, and burned approximately 30,000 acres.
