Justin Jefferson scores a 97-yard touchdown from Vikings' Sam Darnold, leaving the 49ers stunned in Week 2.
Jefferson's streaking run was missed by the 49ers due to Darnold's impressive arm strength.
In his debut against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Sam Darnold brought the confidence he displayed in his arguably best career game with the Minnesota Vikings last week.
With a big fourth-down stop, Darnold was back on his own 3-yard line. Then, head coach Kevin O'Connell decided to call a risky play with star receiver Justin Jefferson streaking downfield.
Jefferson had separation on his 49ers defenders, and Darnold launched his cannon of an arm deep downfield to him.
Jefferson was hit in stride for a big completion by Darnold's beautiful pass.
After the catch, Jefferson's agility and speed were showcased.
Jefferson dashed left, halted briefly, and then sprinted to the right front pylon, evading San Francisco defenders who were attempting to tackle him.
The 49ers were unable to complete the task as Jefferson scored a 97-yard touchdown, leaving them in complete shock.
Since 2008, the longest score for the Vikings as a team was achieved by Bernard Berrian with a 99-yard touchdown from Gus Frerotte.
The Vikings named Darnold their starter after rookie McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus, and O'Connell trusted the veteran journeyman with his offense full of weapons.
In Week 1, Darnold demonstrated his impressive passing skills against the Giants, completing 19 of 24 attempts for 208 yards and two touchdowns. One of those touchdown passes showcased his raw arm strength as he fired a ball to Jalen Nailor down the right sideline, knowing he was about to be hit by a defender.
Darnold's arm strength was never a concern, as demonstrated by his recent bomb to Jefferson.
Last season, the 49ers were defeated by the Vikings on "Monday Night Football" as San Fran quarterback Brock Purdy struggled to get things going.
To secure a major upset, Darnold is counting on Jefferson's plays to continue the trend.
