In the Wild Card Round, the Buccaneers were defeated by the kicker of the commanders who scored a game-winning field goal through the uprights.
After his 37-yarder went through for the win, Zane Gonzalez let out a sigh of relief.
The "Divisional Doink" will forever be associated with the Washington Commanders, as Zane Gonzalez's field goal to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round, 23-20, received a little assistance from the goal post.
With 4:41 remaining in the fourth quarter and the game tied at 20, Jayden Daniels and the Commanders' offense carefully planned their drive to ensure they could score a game-winning field goal at the final whistle.
The game was kept alive by a few crucial plays on the drive, including Daniels finding Dyami Brown for a 21-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-6. With 55 seconds left, Daniels ran for four yards on third-and-2 from Tampa Bay’s 19-yard line, securing the chance to end the game.
As Gonzalez kicked the ball from 37 yards out, it veered to the right and all Bucs fans at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay held their breath, hoping it wouldn't go through the uprights. But when it struck the right goalpost and then went through, it resulted in a three-point lead and a spot in the Divisional Round.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft led Washington to its first playoff win since 2005 with another gutsy performance.
Despite a strong regular season, Daniels struggled under pressure in the playoffs against a Bucs team that had defeated the Eagles on their home turf the previous season.
Despite the tension, Daniels remained composed and performed exceptionally well, scoring 24 out of 35 attempts for 268 yards with two touchdown passes, one of which was the result of a crucial moment in the game.
The Commanders were stopped on their own three yard line after the Bucs' defense made a fantastic fourth-and-goal stop. However, just four plays later, Baker Mayfield made a mistake by botching a fake handoff to rookie receiver Jalen McMillan, causing the ball to hit McMillan's arm and fall to the ground.
On Tampa Bay's 11-yard line, the Commanders recovered, and Daniels punished the Bucs with a five-yard pass on fourth-and-2, taking the lead.
The Bucs failed to convert a red zone opportunity on their next drive and instead opted for a field goal, tying the game at 21-21. However, they wouldn't get another chance to possess the ball as Daniels and his offense took it away.
In the game, Mayfield was 15-for-18 for 185 yards with two touchdowns, while Bucky Irving ran for 77 yards on 17 carries. Mike Evans had the team's first touchdown, which was part of his seven-catch, 92-yard day.
Meanwhile, Brown and McLaurin each had 89 receiving yards on the night.
The Lions, as the No. 1 seed, will present a formidable challenge for the Commanders in the Divisional Round, despite their No. 6 seed being lower than the No. 4 Rams and No. 5 Vikings, who will also be playing in the final wild card game on Monday night.
