In a win over the Wild, Oilers superstar Connor McDavid surpassed Gretzky to become the second-highest scorer in team history.
Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers' superstar, is steadily ascending in the team's history.
On Wednesday, Edmonton Oilers' McDavid scored two goals and an assist in their 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild, surpassing Jarri Kurri for second place in all-time points in Edmonton history with 1,044 points.
In nine seasons with the Oilers, Wayne Gretzky amassed an incredible 1,669 points, making him the all-time points leader.
Gretzky's successor, McDavid, has spent his entire 10-year career with the Oilers and will likely need to spend the next five or six years with the team to continue producing at the level required to surpass Gretzky.
Ryan Hartman scored a quick goal off a face-off to put Minnesota back in a 3-2 lead at the start of the second period. The Oilers responded with a goal from Nugent-Hopkins, who tipped in defenseman Ty Emberson's shot, to tie the game 3-3.
In the third period, the Oilers took a 4-3 lead over the Wild when Vasily Podkolzin's pass deflected off a defenseman's skate and into the net at 1:28.
Then McDavid, as he normally does, made some magic happen.
After the game, Kris Knoblauch, the Oilers head coach, discussed McDavid's achievement.
Knoblauch praised the player's impressive rise up the scoring list, noting that it was a remarkable feat given the organization's history of significant players. He has witnessed many remarkable things from the player, who is a tremendous player and great teammate. Despite being surprised by the player's achievements over the years, Knoblauch said he was not surprised by his recent success. The guys are proud of him, and Knoblauch called it a nice feat.
With their comeback win over the Wild, the Oilers have now won seven of their last eight games, and McDavid's outstanding performance was a significant factor in their success.
This season, the star center has contributed 19 goals and 43 assists in 41 games played, and has remained a key factor in the Oilers' success.
The Oilers, with a record of 28-13-3, occupy the second position in the Pacific division and are currently holding a playoff spot.
