Another high-profile athlete falls victim to home burglary: Malkin
Evgeni Malkin, a Pittsburgh Penguins star, is the latest athlete to have his home burglarized.
According to KDKA-TV, three Stanley Cup rings belonging to Malkin were stolen during the robbery.
On the day the Penguins were playing the Ottawa Senators, the 38-year-old's home was broken into.
On Saturday, the Senators defeated Malkin's Penguins 5-0, with the star forward absent due to an upper-body injury.
"The team stated late Tuesday night that they are collaborating closely with local authorities and team security. Malkin has requested privacy during this time, and the team will not provide any additional information."
During the robbery, Malkin's home security system was not functioning and his safe was left open, as reported by KDKA-TV.
For 19 seasons, Malkin has been a member of the Penguins in the NHL, and in 2011-2012, he was named the league's most valuable player, earning the Hart Trophy. In his career, he has accumulated 1,328 points, including 506 goals and 822 assists.
The FBI alerted professional sports leagues in late May that South American organized crime groups were responsible for a series of home invasions, according to ABC News. The report stated that these groups conduct both physical and technical surveillance to plan their burglaries. They use social media to gather information about a person's home schedule and then carry out their crimes.
In November, both the NFL and NBA issued memos to teams regarding home security measures after some of their athletes' homes were broken into.
In October, their homes were broken into by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the stars of the Kansas City Chiefs.
In December, while the Cincinnati Bengals were playing the Dallas Cowboys, Joe Burrow's home was attacked.
On Sept. 15, while attending a Minnesota Vikings game, Mike Conley Jr.'s Minnesota Timberwolves home was burgled.
Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis had his home broken into on Nov. 2.
Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić's home was burglarized at the end of December.
