High school basketball player leaps to save opponent's life after sudden on-court collapse.
Two days after being hospitalized, the high school student was removed from a ventilator and is now breathing independently, according to reports.
In the opening minutes of a basketball game on Jan. 9, a critical moment prompted a high school basketball player in Oklahoma to put aside competition. When Randy Vitales, 16, went into cardiac arrest, Magnus Miller rushed to his aid.
Dover High School was competing against Life Christian Academy in Orlando, Oklahoma, when Vitales collapsed about three minutes into the game. According to King Fisher Press, Dover coaches determined that Vitales did not have a pulse.
Vitales was reportedly saved by Miller, who had undergone lifeguard training and used an automated external defibrillator, as well as took the lead in performing CPR.
After restoring Vitales' heartbeat, CPR was administered until medical personnel arrived at the gymnasium.
The Guthrie Fire Department confirmed that Miller saved his opponent's life, stating without any doubt that the student-athlete's actions were responsible for the outcome.
Miller said there was no hesitation once he became aware of the situation.
"The 18-year-old didn't hesitate and immediately took control without any second thoughts."
Miller admitted that being described as a lifesaver was somewhat unsettling.
""Hearing someone say I saved their life is strange, but it wasn't really me. It was God being there for both of us. Of course, I didn't go there to play basketball that day." - Miller"
Vitales was admitted to an Oklahoma City hospital's ICU after experiencing an abnormal heartbeat that caused a cardiac arrest.
"On January 9, a statement was released stating that Randy is currently undergoing several tests and will be moved to ICU. Doctors noted that the quick response by the coaches and the training they received likely saved his life. Counselors and some area pastors were present at the school when the teams returned to provide support and comfort to the students."
As of Jan. 11, the Oklahoman reported that Vitales was breathing without the aid of a ventilator.
