Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, suffered a "mild stroke" and is expected to make a full recovery.
Popovich's return has no set timeline, according to the Spurs.
The San Antonio Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich, missed six consecutive games due to an undisclosed medical episode that occurred just before a game against Minnesota earlier this month. On Wednesday, the team disclosed that the longtime coach had actually suffered a stroke.
Before the Spurs' Nov. 2 game against the Timberwolves at Frost Bank Center, Popovich, the oldest coach in league history at 75, experienced a "mild stroke."
The coach's condition is improving, but there is no specific date for his return to the team.
"The Popovich family is thankful for the privacy and space provided by the extended community during his rehabilitation program. While he has started the program, a timeline for his return to the sidelines has not been established."
In Popovich's absence, Mitch Johnson has been the assistant coach and the Spurs have had a record of 3-3.
Johnson discussed Popovich's health issue last week and shared a positive update, without disclosing that he had a stroke.
"He said that he was doing well, but we hadn't talked much and I was busy trying to stay afloat, so I didn't have any details about anything."
Popovich has the most NBA wins with 1,390 regular-season victories and 170 postseason wins, and he has won five NBA titles in his 29th season with San Antonio.
