Following coach Mike McCarthy's departure, former Cowboys star Dez Bryant approves of the move.
Mike McCarthy's four-year tenure concludes with a 43-24 regular season record.
According to multiple reports, Mike McCarthy's tenure as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys has come to a close.
According to a statement obtained by ESPN from Jerry Jones, the organization and McCarthy reached a mutual agreement to part ways.
"Before reaching the stage of contract negotiations, it became apparent that it would be in our best interests to go in different directions. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica, and their family all the best. They have been a valuable part of our community here."
Mike McCarthy has been highly respected by Jones, who stated, "I have great admiration for Mike and he has successfully guided the team through some unique and challenging periods during his leadership."
The search for the next Cowboys head coach is expected to begin immediately.
After news broke about McCarthy's departure, Bryant commented on the situation. "A smart decision for the Cowboys," he wrote on Twitter Monday afternoon.
Bryant spent the majority of his NFL career with the Cowboys.
Later, Bryant expressed his concerns about Jeanty possibly joining the Cowboys next season, as multiple mock drafts have linked him to Dallas.
"If Dallas is considering drafting Ashton Jeanty, Mike McCarthy is not the coach to coach him."
The Cowboys' rushing attack underperformed this season, and the team faced criticism for not signing running back Derrick Henry, who had a standout first season with the Baltimore Ravens, rushing for 1,921 yards.
McCarthy's contract ended after a 7-10 season, despite his team having a 12-5 record in the three years prior. Despite this, Dallas has not advanced past the divisional round of the NFC playoffs since their last Super Bowl in 1995.
The Cowboys will be entering their 30th season since their last Super Bowl victory.
McCarthy was the coach of the Packers for 13 seasons, achieving a record of 125-77-2 from 2006-18. He led the team to a Super Bowl title at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Cowboys, 14 years ago. After a full season out of coaching, McCarthy is considering taking the Dallas job.
